The ONLY Way to Celebrate a 50th Birthday

The Most Important Birthday of All for a Man Kind of Creeps Up on You

Sure you thought that the 10th, 16th or 21st birthday might have been the really big deal.  For a woman, the 30th is the one that you must get right.  When it comes to the man in the house, however, turning 50 is filled with all kinds of emotion, most of which he is clueless about:
  • Who am I really?
  • What have I accomplished?
  • How long do I have?
  • What can I still do to prove myself?
  • Which dreams are no longer achievable?
  • Should I start a bucket list?
We know about the "middle age crazies," and if they haven't already shown up, this is the birthday that is likely to start the gears turning.  What does all this have to do with a birthday party?  This is a time for 100% of the attention to be on him.  Nobody else shares the spotlight at this party.  Whether a roast or a tribute or a combination of the two, make this a day where words and hugs will be remembered for a long time.

The Roast:  The male adult is not much different in the ways he relates to others than he was at 12 or 17.  Locking horns or wrestling your friend into submission is the best kind of play possible.  Get the whole gang together, and have his buds prepare the best barbs they can come up with.

Stories are great, too.  As long as the punchline is aimed directly at the celebrant.  Do you have a natural MC in your crowd?  Give him point, and let him direct the merciless digs and jibes.

The Tribute:  After the roast, it is time to build the poor guy up again.  He'll likely blush and might fight back tears, but let him know how much he is appreciated, even revered by family and friends.  This is the chance for an honest eulogy while alive.

The gift:  Have the kids (wife, too), write down their tribute.  Put these on parchment paper and frame them.  This could easily be the best gift he will ever receive.
