Halloween is fun celebration for the whole family, but in the mix of all the trick or treat fun, let's make sure every child is safe in the process with these important tips to remember:
Costume safety: Help kids choose costumes that can be seen at night. If your child must have a dark costume like a witch or Darth Vader, we recommend adding reflective tape or strips to the costume and to the trick-or-treat bag. Some stores carry glowing aerosol spray paint for fabric that can be washed out. Kids and accompanying adults should also carry flashlights or glow sticks to increase visibility.
Face paint is preferable to a mask that might restrict a child's vision. If children do wear masks -- paging Darth Vader again -- make sure they do not interfere with breathing or hearing and that eye holes are wide enough to not interfere with eyesight.
Trick-or-treating safety: It's definitely the safest for kids to go out in groups and be escorted by adults to each door. For more safety, consider trick-or-treating with the littlest kids at an organized afternoon event rather than on neighborhood streets after dark.
Remind kids about the Safety Store's tips for pedestrian safety:
- Cross streets at corners or on crosswalks, never from between parked vehicles
- Before crossing, look left, then right, then left again
- Make eye contact with drivers and make sure a driver sees you before crossing.
It's also very important to teach children their home phone number and street address in case they are separated from adults, as well as teaching them to resist and shout "No!" or "This is not my mother/father" if someone tries to get them to go somewhere, accept something other than a treat or leave with them.
