Simple Baking Tips for The Best Brownies Ever!

Simple Baking Tips for The Best Brownies Ever! It’s that time of year when the weather goes from warm to wet and it’s nice to have a plate of warm gooey brownies waiting for you after a long day. But making the perfect chewy chocolate dessert doesn’t have to be a challenge. It’s as simple as follow a few rules in the right way for the best after school or work snack you can imagine.

Only Use the Best Chocolate. It might feel like the simple solution to just get the easiest or least expensive brand, but you really want to go with a high-quality semisweet or bittersweet chocolate or cocoa when choosing your chocolate. Great brands include Scharrfen Berger, Saco, Ghirardelli, Droste, and Callebut chocolates.

Sift Your Cocoa Well. You don’t want to end up with powdered lumps in what should be smooth and velvety sweetness. So scoop the cocoa with a metal measuring spoon or cup, then sift or whisk gently with the flour.

Always Use the Right Pan. Using the right pan size and shape are important in any recipe, but it’s especially important when making brownies because the how deep the pan is, allows the batter to have that full tasted and rich texture. Shallow pans make chewy brownies while deeper pans make denser, cake-like bars.

Use a Spatula to Spread. It’s best to go with a small metal spatula because they’re better at spreading brownie batter and icing evenly. Goldman suggests dipping spatulas in hot water before using to keep brownie batter from sticking.

Don’t Over Cook. No one wants to end up with a pan full of hardened, dry bars. So to avoid this, place your brownie pans on baking sheets lined with parchment paper; this will keep the bottoms of the brownies from scorching before the tops are set.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about making your own brownies and now you know the secrets to making them just right. However, if it’s still too much to wrap your head around or you just don’t have the time, but still want the home-made touch, you Ontario Bakery can do it for you.  We’re the baking experts. Call us today to place your own, customized delicious order.

Simple Fun Birthday Ideas for Tween Girls That Are Hard to Please!

Simple Fun Birthday Ideas for Tween Girls That Are Hard to Please!

If you're planning a birthday party for a tween girl, you’re facing a big challenge. She doesn’t want the little girl stuff but she’s not quite ready for the big girl stuff either! So aside from knowing you need to stay away from the typical decor like balloons, banners or themed desserts, and the childhood games she’s outgrown, you need ideas that she’s going to find both fun and cool for her new age and stage!
Idea #1 Pamper Party
Invite a couple of your friends to be spa specialists (not the other girls mom’s preferably) to come and do the girls toes, nails and maybe even some facials. You could put face masks on them, paint their nails and toenails and even have stylish drinks with lemonade and grenadine with little umbrellas inside. If you want to go further with this one, book a makeup artist to do their make up and then bring them all to the movie and dinner later to show of their fabulous state.
#2. Tween’s Got Talent!
How about hosting a karaoke night?  You can rent out a machine at home or go out for the real experience!  Some places have age restrictions, but you usually have the option of renting out a little room out.  Add grabbing Chinese food to that mix and you've made a classic win.
#3. Take it Outside!
For a totally different feel, take the party outside and have an adventure day.  Here, you can go on a hike, build a raft, co canoeing.  If you have access to a lake or a little island, this is a great idea for everyone involved.
You could start things off with lunch out somewhere nice and then maybe they could get their nails done. Then have a movie night setup for when you get home, so they can put up their feet and chill into some more relaxing fun. Get some delicious treats and give the living room to them for a few hours.

Sure, the tween years can be hard, but they can be fun too with the right attitude, creativity and planning! At Ontario Bakery, we know birthdays.  It's one of the celebrations we do best. We'd love to make this day even more incredible, so please, visit our California location or give us a call!

Simple Tips to Finding the Perfect Florist for the Wedding of Your Dreams

Simple Tips to Finding the Perfect Florist for the Wedding of Your DreamsWeddings are hard to plan as it is and the last thing you need is for the flowers to be complicated. Flowers are the hallmark of your wedding, the eye catchers and final accent and flare. So make it good. Make them beautiful and simplify the process so you can get back to the fun of it all!

We want to share some tips for getting the perfect flowers and hiring the right florist.

Firstly, before you go "bouquet crazy," make sure to find out exactly which flowers are going to be in season at the time of your wedding.

Make sure to take some time to check out your local farmer's market. Talk with growers who sell cut flowers. Ask them questions, lots of questions. This tip is incredibly helpful if you are doing your own flowers.

Pick your favorite three florists and set up a time to interview them. Be sure to pick three though. Too many florists and you're drowning in info, too few florists and you're very limited.

Initially, when you visit a potential florist, don’t show them your ideas or your budget. Just ask a lot of questions around their best ideas, styles and budget plans. Ask what their procedure is if a flower is damaged/unavailable for your event, ask to see their portfolio, and ask how many weddings they book on a typical weekend, so you have an idea of how available they’ll be.

Look online at wholesalers and become familiar with how flowers are shipped. As an example, almost all garden roses must be ordered as an entire case. That's almost 100 blooms! If you only want garden roses in your bouquet and no where else your florist is going to be stuck with about 80 garden roses. In some floral shops, you will be charged for the full case, not just what you use.

Find out about hidden charges, delivery fees, etc before you make your choice. If you want your florist to set up your arrangements, you might have to pay for their gas plus an hourly fee.

DO NOT pay for petals! Have someone pick up a bouquet at a supermarket and have fun destroying the blooms yourself. It's an amazing stress reliever and you will be happy knowing that you didn't waste $10-$20 for someone else to rip them apart.

As always, we want the best for your big day and your floral experience should be beautiful and stress free! Remember that for those of you in the Southern California area, Ontario Bakery is here to make the perfect custom cake for any occasion!

4 Fun Game Ideas for Little Ones With Big Imaginations!

4 Fun Game Ideas for Little Ones With Big Imaginations!Little ones say and do the funniest things! It’s no wonder we love hanging out with them! But as I’m sure everyone can admit, sometimes you get a little stuck on what to do with them. What activities keep their attention and what games can you play? Well, whether you’re looking for things to do on a rainy day or fun games to play at the next birthday party, you’re going to love the tips we’ve got to share with you!

Have fun with feet!
Have fun as everyone enjoys taking of their socks and engaging those cute little toes! Show your young friends how to pick up small toys with your toes and put them in a bucket. For kids that are more ahead of the game, try picking up all of the yellow objects, then the blue, the red, etc. This is such a fun one and a great way to make cleaning more fun, when you can put toys away or clothes in the laundry.

Try a balloon toss!
Start by blowing up several balloons and then have the kids toss them back and forth. Try having them moving closer to each other and farther away from each other. Show them how to use different body parts (hands, elbows, heads) or blowing the balloon up in the air. See how many times your preschooler can bounce the balloon up before it falls to the ground. This is good because it also gives the small child a chance to be coordinated, as the balloon spends more time in the air.

Use those legs!
Have an adult or older kid in the room give directions like “run to the big tree, touch the bark, and come back,” or “run over to the slide, go down one time, and come back” or “run around the tree three times.” This one’s great not only for gross motor skills, but for listening carefully and following directions. Feel free to use less commands in the beginning and make them more challenging as you go along.

Hawaiian hula time!
This one needs some advance planning but it’s totally worth it. Invest in several different colored hula hoops. With this one, simply lay them on the ground. Next, give the child or children fun instructions such as “run to the red hula hoop and pretend to be a car,” or “hop over to the green hula hoop like a bunny.” They'll learn colors while exercising their fast thinking muscles too.

As you can see, playing and engaging with little ones helps them grow healthy, smart and strong! Whether it’s at home or for a fun party, Ontario Bakery has you covered with both the fun and the treats! We specialize in all the custom baked goods you’ve been looking for and we want to make your next party a hit! Contact us today and see what’s possible for your next celebration!

How To Plan the Perfect Wedding Reception Without Dipping into Your Savings!

How To Plan the Perfect Wedding Reception Without Dipping into Your Savings! Getting ready for the big day is fun and exciting but the costs can really add up and bring a lot of stress to the table. What you need is a few wedding planning ideas to cost less and be simple to arrange. And we at  Ontario Bakery  have learned a thing or two during our years in business and we want to share some tips to help you save money but not compromise on elegance or quality. So sit back, take notes and take a deep breath, knowing you’re in good hands!

Go simple but with style
Many times, the fancier rooms are far more expensive. But you can choose to rent a more plain room and decorate it yourself. Our two favorite ways to do that? Sheer fabric and white christmas lights. They can be hung from the ceiling, around tables, around the cake, or in potted plants. If you don’t want to use Christmas lights, consider lanterns instead. Then mount or hang the sheer fabric or curtains over the lights and you’ve got a sparkling night sky!

Make your own seat accents
Seat covers can be expensive to rent and a lot of work to make. Instead of using seat covers, get some beautiful wide ribbon to tie on the backs of the chairs to add some elegance and spruce things up. Ribbon is a cheap alternative compared to fancy seat covers. Enlist the help of friends to get the ribbons cut and tied for the big day.

Add small water fountains
A nice addition to the entrance of your reception would be a water fountain. It could even be a small one that you have in your home that sits on a table. The sound of a water fountain is so refreshing, and it would be nice for your guests to listen to as they can finally relax at the reception.

Candles everywhere
There’s nothing more romantic than a dim room lit only by the glow of hundreds of candles. And luckily, candles are inexpensive.

Bring your own music
Hiring a dj can be fun, but totally not necessary. Why not spend some time creating your own playlist with both fun, danceable songs and romantic slow songs too? This way you can literally just set it and forget it and just enjoy the night (or day) away.

This is your wedding, not your whole life. So don’t take on more stress than needed!
Ontario bakery wants the best for your celebration. We hope you have enjoyed these suggestions and that you'll come to us first  for your custom wedding cake needs!

Feeling Romantically Stumped? Here Are Freshly Baked Date Ideas Just For You!

Feeling Romantically Stumped? Here Are Freshly Baked Date Ideas Just For You!You love going out with your special someone, but what happens when going out just doesn’t feel so special anymore? The truth is, as anyone will tell you, that as you travel on the road of love, it takes effort to keep the spark and magic alive. There are many reasons for this, some of them being getting older and changing, the stress and busyness of everyday life and just generally getting used to each other.
So the key is to connect and shake things up. You need a chance to look into each other’s eyes as if for the first time and do things from that similar fresh perspective. That’s what this post is all about; helping you see each other again in a fun and connected way!
Foot Talks
Bare with me on this, but it’s so good. Set some time aside for foot rubs and conversation. If you can do this during a hotel overnight, even better! But take some time, set a timer and have one partner rub the other partner’s feet for 5 minutes; 2.5 minutes on each foot. The one getting massaged gets to talk about their feelings, their dreams, what they’ve been going through or what they’re learning. The partner rubbing gets to reflect back what they’ve heard, and share their encouragement. (not solutions!) Then the partners switch!

Mini Trip
It’s not easy to go on vacation all the time, so how about a long weekend? If you’re the outdoor type, go camping. If you’re a luxury type, find a beautiful hotel and order room service. Maybe you’d like to meet somewhere in the middle. You could go somewhere 2 hours away, stay at a bed and breakfast or a wellness resort and spend some time without media and more talking and laughing.

Go Back
Regardless of whether it’s there or not, revisit the place where you first met. Walk down the street. Go inside. Sit outside and look. Imagine what would have happened if you hadn’t crossed paths and look at all the good that’s happened because you did. Eat the same food. Listen to the same song. Maybe wear the same clothes? Make it fun.

Sweet List
Feeling Romantically Stumped? Here Are Freshly Baked Date Ideas Just For You!Plan a night to bake together. Choose a cake or a pie that you both love and take the time to get all the right ingredients and time you need to bake. Then do the baking! Put on your favorite music and agree to not talk about anything stressful or heavy. This is sweet time! Then while the sweet is baking, use that time to share what you love about the other person. Tell them where you’ve seen them be sweet in the last few days/weeks and appreciate them. Take turns doing this and see where it takes you. But don’t forget about that cake in the oven!

Cake and Wine
Who does that? You do. You can enjoy and indulge in a rich red velvet cake and a bottle of red wine. Why not? Enjoy it in front of a fire or at the beach at sunset. Just allow your senses to overcome you and get lost in the moment. Share a kiss and let it take you away.

No matter what you decide to do, the key is to spend some time together remembering your years together and looking forward to the years you have left.

Ontario Bakery is in love with love. That’s why we are so many people’s first call for wedding, valentine’s, engagement and anniversary cakes custom made for each couple. Call us today and reserve yours!

Did You Know That Eating Chocolate Adds to Your Health And Beauty?

Did You Know That Eating Chocolate Adds to Your Health And Beauty?Chocolate is full of antioxidant rich nutrients that are necessary for healthy skin, hair, vitality and stress levels, which means you have the right to eat it daily! Great news, right? But before you reach for just any chocolate, know that “health” chocolate needs to be low in sugar, high in cacao and minimally processed.
Why is chocolate good for your health? Chocolate is loaded with winning antioxidants.  And what are antioxidants good for? They rid the body of free radicals; those menacing little molecules creating the havoc in your body responsible for aging, disease and even cancer! The antioxidants bond themselves to the free radicals and pretty much walk the plank with them to make sure they are disposed of properly. Other foods that contain antioxidants are pomegranates, blueberries, green tea, red wine, gogi berries; so can you believe that chocolate is right up there with them?

Cacao, the magic ingredient within chocolate also contains various essential nutrients needed to not just keep your insides happy but your skin and hair as well. Believe it or not, cacao has sun protection properties with the power to shield your skin from harmful UV rays, preventing sensitive conditions like sunburns and skin cancer. Regular dark chocolate consumption also helps you achieve that sought after smooth, problem free glow, as it keeps your skin moist and well nourished.

No big surprise here, but chocolate is great at reducing stress! Dark chocolate boasts wonderful stress-relieving qualities and works wonders in getting you a glowing skin (more skin benefits!) by reducing elevated stress hormones. .....ah...  dopamine!

Lastly, let’s talk about what chocolate can do for your hair! Cacao is a great aid in promoting blood circulation in the scalp which leads to increased growth of healthy, lustrous locks, reducing hair loss. In addition to that, it's anti-inflammatory nature helps minimize the odds of getting scalp infections.  Infused with the goodness of several hair-benefiting ingredients, dark chocolate improves the overall health of your tresses, making them shiny, sleek and voluminous.

Now you know you can crave chocolate and reach for it! If you so find yourself wanting to indulge a little bit more into your sweet tooth and have a celebration to prepare for, please let us know!  At Ontario Bakery we are always ready to make your life a little sweeter.

Good News for Singles on Valentine’s Day! Eating Chocolate Might Be Better Than Being In Love!

Good News for Singles on Valentine’s Day! Eating Chocolate Might Be Better Than Being In Love!
Valentine’s Day is hard for those that have no one to celebrate it with. All the warm fuzzy feelings, happy hearts and closeness are so unbeatable. …. Or are they? Science is beginning to show us that actually eating chocolate just might be able to simulate the pleasure of being in love; to a degree, of course. Studies have shown that chocolate causes the human body to react just as strongly to it in a positive way, as it does to feelings of romance and infatuation. So last year, we at Ontario Bakery stumbled upon this interesting article from the dailymail. It was so loved, that we thought we’d share it again this year. That way, if you’re feeling alone, you can take some comfort in knowing that the feel good feeling you’re seeking may not be replaceable, but it can be simulated in a very delicious way!

The Ancient Incas knew it, as does Bridget Jones and that kindly person who always gives you their last Rolo. Ever since humankind grew its first sweet tooth, there's been nothing like chocolate to raise the spirits. For years, academics have tried to discover exactly what makes it so irresistible - speculating that key ingredients like cocoa beans, caffeine or any of its other 300 compounds can boost energy and libido. But now scientists at Cambridge University have carried out brain scans that suggest a much more simple explanation. Chocolate is linked to feelings of well being simply because it just tastes so good!

They claim munching a bar induces sensations that could be even more pleasurable than listening to your favorite music, winning the lottery, or falling in love. Cambridge neuroscientist Adrian Owen said the balance of the evidence suggested that it was more to do with taste, than psychoactive chemicals.

The average bar of chocolate, he claimed, simply did not contain enough mood-altering substances to make a difference - some of them, for example, were found in higher doses in a lump of Cheddar cheese or sausage. Dr Owen, who works at the university's Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre, said: "The scientific data suggests that the mood-enhancing effects of chocolate are not pharmacological - the constituents of chocolate do not appear to affect the brain via a direct biological action.

"An alternative explanation is that the effects of eating chocolate are psychological - the unique combination of aroma, texture and taste makes eating chocolate a pleasurable experience that stimulates the emotional 'feel-good' centers of the brain. In short, the chocolate tastes good, so we feel good. The evidence for this are scans that have tracked changes in the activity of the orbifrontal-cortex - on the brain's surface - w hich analyses the reward value of incoming inform action to the brain.

As scans on a group of volunteers show ed (see above), the orbi-frontal cortex glows even more when they were munching a bar of chocolate than when they were listening to pleasant music. Dr Owen, 36, said: "Both smelling and eating chocolate activate areas of the brain that are known to be involved in creating feelings of pleasure. It seems chocolate has a unique blend of sensory qualities which m a ke us feel good, activating pleasure centres in the brain. (

Scientific proof or not, we know we love chocolate and so do you, right? So if you’re lonely this Valentine’s Day, do something special just for you. Indulge. Take a bite and savor every moment of it.  That's why Ontario Bakery strives to provide the most delicious and succulent desserts possible.

Why Chocolate Is the Go-To Romance Gift for Everyone's Valentine’s Day

Why Chocolate Is the Go-To Romance Gift for Everyone's Valentine’s Day
Every year, when Valentine’s Day rolls around, we’re compelled to go out to buy and enjoy chocolate with the ones we love. But why? What is it about chocolate that identifies it so powerfully with romance? And is it all in our heads? Well, yes it is - but necessarily how you think.
The truth is, there are actually scientifically based reasons behind why chocolate is our go-to for Valentine’s Day and the romance around it. There are naturally occurring chemicals in chocolate that are good for you and the darker the chocolate, the higher it will be in substances associated with physical and emotional well-being. One of those substances is theobromine, which is found in larger quantities in chocolate than any other food. It’s a gentle stimulant, that as well as increasing blood flow also increases serotonin, it’s also a neurotransmitter known for igniting feelings of love and romantic pleasure.

Another one of chocolate’s powerful components is phenylethylamine, which stimulates the body to release endorphins (feel-good neurotransmitters), and also increases the activity of dopamine, the body’s reward chemical, combining to produce the kind of feeling that you get when you are in love. And the latest happy-making component to be traced in chocolate is anandamide, a cannabinoid whose name is derived – with good reason – from the Sanskrit for “bliss”.
Just those two components alone make this treat a superfood to be enjoyed. It literally releases the necessary hormones necessary for you to reduce stress and feel good.

So fine chocolate looks good, smells good, tastes good, feels good in the mouth, and contains things which make you feel good.

But let’s not just talk about how it’s so good. Let’s instead make the best of it and be sure to enjoy it in it’s fullest possibilities!

This year for Valentine’s Day, in addition to all of our delectable custom baked cakes and delights, we’re adding chocolate covered strawberries to your feel-good, romantic experience! You and your love will simply melt as the chocolate shell cracks on your tongue, revealing the fresh strawberry juice and bright refreshing texture of nature’s candy coated with nature’s “feel-good” superfood.

This year, enjoy Valentine’s Day with the best chocolate treats you can find, from the family owned bakery you know and love, Ontario Bakery. We can’t wait to make your special day full of love, flavor and delight!

Simple Tips for the Dreamy Spring Wedding You’ve Always Wanted

Simple Tips for the Dreamy Spring Wedding You’ve Always WantedAs you shiver in the cold of winter, it’s easy to find yourself daydreaming about the beautiful wedding day you’re so eagerly planning. And if it’s a spring or summer wedding, you’ll likely go there more often. You think of all the flowers, the smell of the grass, the sunshine and all the happy faces you’ll be surrounded by. But then a thought creeps in and reminds you of all the little details that are still left to figure out and a sense of panic settles in. You don’t want to mess up a single thing; you want this day to be perfect. But how can you know it will be? How can you make sure you’ll have the wedding you’ve dreamed of without the stress and with all the happily ever after details?
You think about what could go wrong, what could go right and you plan accordingly. That’s right. It’s not as stressful as you might think! However, one very important planning tip that I want to leave you with today is to let it go. Don’t let go of the planning and the details, but remember that even if things don’t go exactly according to plan, the day will still be beautiful if you focus on the point of the day. Think of a wet bar of soap. If you’re so afraid of dropping it that you squeeze it hard to keep it in your grip, it will fly out of your hands. So hold it palm up, strong and steady. Do that with your wedding and you won’t lose sight of the beauty of the day or of all the things that are going right.
Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s talk about the most important details for making sure your spring wedding is as dreamy as you imagined it.

Be Weather Wise.
We all know you’re hoping for a bright sunshiney day, but the truth is, you never can know for sure if that will happen, even if you live in California. Spring has a way of being unpredictable. Plan ahead and play it safe by choosing a venue with indoor and outdoor options. Make sure to alert your guests to this possibility as well so that they can come prepared. Speak to your venue director about lined paths, tents and awnings as well. You don’t want your reception or walk ways to have any mud on them and you definitely don’t want people or things to get wet!

Provide Umbrellas
It's spring, and as mentioned above, rain can happen. Why not stock the wedding party up with transparent umbrellas? You can assign ushers to walk people from their cars to the venue and to the reception as needed and it will all be very charming! If it rains, you'll be covered. If not, use them in the photos to remember your beautiful day!

Elegantly Layer.
Still along with the weather, we need to remember that Spring, with its traditionally warm, sunny days and cooler nights, is the best time of year to plan to include a warmer accessory or two in your bridal getup. Better yet, try on one of this year’s prettiest fashion trends: wedding gowns with sleeves. Keep the same ideas in mind when you’re picking out bridesmaid dresses and consider skipping the lightweight chiffon gowns in favor of fabric with a little more weight and warmth.

Color Pops.
While pastels are almost always the first colors on our minds this time of year, spring weddings are great for punchier palettes, too. Bold, bright fuchsia is a particularly lovely way to set the tone, and the perfect complement to all of that fresh green grass — as are yellow, coral, and blue. Be sure to use complimentary colors to your wedding party and bring them into the flow of the ceremony and reception decor through simple seat and table ribbons!

Light & Fluffy.
Spring is a time of lightness and excitement. So let the food match. Stay away from heavy entrees and desserts and go with more fresh themes that feel light and easy on the belly. Your guests will be delighted that they still fit in their gorgeous gowns at the end of the day or evening!

Reserve Ahead of time!
Spring may be before the real wedding rush begins, but it’s still a popular time of year to tie the knot. Make sure you book early, especially if you live in a place where hot summers push the wedding season forward. Don’t forget to take advantage of the season’s several holidays and look into booking a Sunday evening celebration to spread out the fun and potentially cut costs. Remember, even we at Ontario Bakery get booked for custom wedding cakes early, so call ahead and double check dates and orders so there's no confusion or details lost in the shuffle.

Enjoy every moment.
Seasonal food, seasonal flowers, even seasonal favors — this is the best time of year to do it all. Everything is fresh and lovely, and it will certainly be a better fit for your budget than ordering summer blooms or fall vegetables. Plus, personalized packets of flower seeds make for a unique gift your guests can enjoy long after the last slice of cake is gone.

It’s time to sit back and be excited that your special day is coming so soon. Keep a checklist and check it twice, then let it go with grace; you're prepared! And Ontario Bakery is happy to meet your custom wedding day needs; so contact us today!
